Students of Tamale Technical University on Monday staged a massive protest to demand better welfare conditions and improved infrastructure on campus.
The aggrieved students blocked all entry points to the school and set lorry tyres ablaze at the administration block to register their displeasure. The situation escalated when police were deployed to restore calm, leading to clashes that left some students injured.
Speaking to the media, the Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Musa Mahamudu, said the demonstration was necessitated by management’s failure to address critical issues affecting students’ comfort and academic life.
“Our main aim for this demonstration is the issue we have with management, which has to do with pressing matters that affect students in this university. Let’s talk about hostels, lecture halls, campus comfort, etc. Over the years, we have been paying school fees and levies for development, which are supposed to improve this university,” he explained.
The students also petitioned the Minister of Education, citing what they described as systematic neglect of student welfare, alleged misapplication of funds, and an unjustified proposal to increase fees.
“We are compelled to bring to your urgent attention issues of systematic neglect of student welfare, alleged misapplication of funds, and the proposed increment of fees without justification. These actions, in our view, contravene the principles of equity, accountability, and quality education enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana,” the petition read in part.
They further lamented that the university’s infrastructure remains in poor condition despite years of paying development levies. The students therefore urged management to ensure judicious use of funds collected from them.
