Former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Muntari has criticized the state of the Ghana Premier League, describing it as a “fiasco” and expressing doubt about its potential for growth.
In an interview with 3 Sports, Muntari, who played for Liberty Professionals at the start of his career and later returned to feature for Hearts of Oak in the 2021/2022 season, shared his disappointment with the league’s lack of professional standards.
“The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league,” he lamented. “Maybe now it’s worse, and it leaves you wondering. If we do not help these guys, how will we have top players for the Black Stars?”
Muntari highlighted the poor state of basic facilities, including unhygienic changing rooms, as a major issue affecting the league.
“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody,” he said.
He also expressed his intention to secure funds to help improve the league but emphasized the dire need for systemic changes to elevate its standards.
The Ghana Premier League continues to struggle with attracting a headline sponsor, with the first round of the current season being played without one.
Muntari’s comments reflect growing concerns about the league’s infrastructure, professionalism, and financial management, raising questions about its ability to produce talent for the national team and compete on the international stage.
