A violent clash between students of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) and Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (KASS) in the Ashanti Region has resulted in significant property damage on both campuses.
The confrontation saw students burning car tyres and hurling stones. Several properties were vandalized, including four private vehicles at KASS, their school gate, as well as a billboard and notice board at KTI.
According to Gabriel Kingsford Osei, Principal of KTI, the altercation began on Thursday night when KASS students allegedly attacked KTI’s billboard using stones and machetes.
“I pushed my students to the dormitory to prevent any chaos and went to talk to the students of KASS, but they disobeyed me. Among them was a security person with a catapult, leading them to cause destruction,” Osei claimed.
However, Rev. Father Kenneth Collins Owusu, a tutor at KASS, believes the fight could have been triggered by tensions from the ongoing inter-schools’ athletics competition in Kumasi.
“The smallest argument between our students and KTI often escalates into confrontations. When one group is provoked, they mobilize their colleagues for retaliation,” he explained.
The Ashanti Regional Education Directorate has summoned the authorities of both schools to find a lasting resolution to the conflict.
Meanwhile, the police stepped in to restore calm, but no arrests have been made as investigations continue.
