Standard Chartered Hosts STEM Hackathon to Empower Girls in Science

Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC recently organized a STEM hackathon at Accra High School to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event aimed to ignite interest in STEM careers among senior high school girls in Ghana, aligning with this year’s global theme of “Women and Girls in Science Leadership, a New Era for Sustainability.”

The hackathon began with a mentoring session led by female professionals from Standard Chartered, focusing on essential skills like time management, goal setting, and staying focused. This session aimed to inspire and guide the students towards successful careers in STEM.

Two teams from Accra High School and Labone Senior High School participated in the hackathon, where they were challenged to develop digital solutions for managing “pocket money.” Labone Senior High School’s teams proposed mobile apps called Spend Le$$ and Digital Susu Box (DSB), while Accra High School’s teams presented The Tracking System app and Ingenious Solar Automated Money Box.

Labone Senior High School emerged as the winner of the hackathon, impressing the judges with the feasibility, visual outlook, innovation, and delivery of their presentation. As a reward, the school received a 43-inch Smart TV for its ICT laboratory.

This initiative is part of Standard Chartered’s global youth economic empowerment initiative, Futuremakers, which aims to support disadvantaged young people, especially women and people with disabilities, to learn, earn, and grow. Through this hackathon, Standard Chartered is creating an inclusive environment for women to thrive as innovators and leaders in STEM.

By providing engaging and relevant science education, along with necessary support, Standard Chartered’s hackathon is empowering the next generation of women leaders in STEM in Ghana.
