Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has donated GHC 300,000 worth of medical supplies to help curb the spread of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in the Upper West Region and ensure free treatment for affected patients.

The donation includes 8,400 doses of Ceftriaxone injection, 1,600 doses of Reception injection, 2,100 units each of Ringers Lactate and Normal Saline, 12 packs of spinal needles, and 300 doses of Dexamethasone.

During the presentation in Wa, Speaker Bagbin underscored the significance of health, stating, “It’s your wealth, it’s your health. Any other thing is not yours.”

The Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Damien Punguyire, disclosed that all districts, except Sissala West and Wa East, have been affected, with Lawra District being the latest hotspot. He stressed that early detection is crucial, as timely treatment significantly improves survival rates.

“With all the support coming, first from the Minister of Health and now from the Right Honorable Speaker, we’re going to ensure that people do not die,” Dr. Punguyire assured. He also noted that initial deaths were largely due to delays in seeking medical attention, especially among those without active health insurance.

Under Ghana Health Service directives, meningitis treatment is now free. Additionally, health officials have intensified awareness campaigns and case management training for medical personnel.

Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the crisis. Following an emergency session on February 10, he launched a sensitization campaign to educate the public on prevention and early treatment.

The National Lottery Authority has also contributed GHC 100,000 to support the transportation of medical equipment and outreach efforts.
