Six people are currently hospitalized following a violent confrontation in Kwahu Abetifi as tensions erupted over an attempt to destool Kwahu Adontenhene Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, the acting President of the Kwahu Traditional Area.
The incident occurred when Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, claiming to be the Abrewatia (chief’s wife) of the area, arrived in Abetifi accompanied by a group of armed men. Initially thought to be National Security personnel, the group reportedly detained Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III at the Abetifi Palace and transported him to a nearby older palace, where Yaa Asantewaa allegedly performed destoolment rituals, including the slaughtering of a sheep.
Word of the attempted destoolment quickly spread, leading local youth to gather in protest, armed with machetes. The situation was further inflamed until local police and military arrived to restore order, preventing further violence.
In response, traditional leaders conducted their own rites to reaffirm Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III’s legitimacy, restoring him to his position at the main Abetifi Palace.
Following the incident, Yaa Asantewaa and her group were arrested, escorted under tight security, and taken to the police station to prevent further conflict. Police investigations are ongoing.
