2025 AFCONQ: Jordan Ayew Named Captain for Angola and Niger Matches

Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has appointed Jordan Ayew as captain for the final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Ayew will lead the Black Stars in crucial matches against Angola and Niger, with the games set to take place on November 15 and November 18, 2024, respectively.

Ghana will face Angola, who have already qualified, in Luanda before hosting Niger, the bottom team in the group, in Accra. The appointment comes after a conversation between Addo and Ayew, who currently plays for Leicester City, confirming him as captain in the absence of Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey.

This follows a previous decision in October where Addo named Mohammed Kudus of West Ham as captain for matches against Sudan, a move that was widely criticized after Ghana’s disappointing results—a goalless draw at home and a 2-0 away loss, which severely affected their qualification hopes.

Currently, Ghana sits winless in their group, with a recent 1-0 loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger. For any hope of qualification, the Black Stars must secure victories in both upcoming matches and rely on Sudan losing their games against Niger and Angola.
