The first half of Manchester City’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid turned out to be costly for one of the club’s greatest legends.
Sergio Aguero, confident in his prediction, placed a $10,000 bet on there being two goals scored in the opening 45 minutes at the Etihad Stadium.
Before kickoff, the former Man City striker took to social media to share his wager. Although Erling Haaland gave City an early lead, Aguero’s bet didn’t pay off as it remained the only goal of the first half.
Aguero, now 36, has strong ties to the club, having spent a decade at City and scoring 260 goals in 390 appearances. He later had a brief spell at Barcelona, where he found the net once—in a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in El Clasico—before retiring.
Ahead of the Champions League fixture, Aguero expressed his unwavering faith in City’s ability to win, boldly stating on the Som I Serem FCB Podcast, “Real Madrid cannot beat Man City. If they do, I will cut off my testicles.”
His confidence even caught the attention of Daniel Sturridge, who humorously responded, “I’m sceptical of that spectacle. That doesn’t sound good to me! I wouldn’t be that confident, but fair play to you, Sergio.”
Despite Real Madrid’s early threats, City led 1-0 at halftime, thanks to Haaland’s first-ever goal against the Spanish giants. However, Madrid fought back in the second half, equalizing through Kylian Mbappe’s deflected shot.
Haaland restored City’s lead, netting his 49th Champions League goal in just 48 appearances. But Brahim Diaz struck again for Madrid, bringing the score level.
The match took a dramatic turn in the final moments when Jude Bellingham found the back of the net, securing a 3-2 victory for Real Madrid and leaving Aguero’s bet in ruins.
