The Savannah Regional Electoral Commission (EC) has convened a Regional Inter-Party Advisory Committee (RIPAC) meeting to address the fallout from recent violent incidents in the Damongo Constituency.
The meeting, which will include key stakeholders, aims to determine the next steps regarding the constituency’s election results and provide clarity in light of the unrest.
Violence erupted in Damongo due to delays in declaring election results, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and the destruction of the EC office. Frustrated youth reportedly stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Centre, setting the EC office ablaze and causing extensive damage.
Amid the chaos, an NDC supporter, identified as Sibannira Mukaila, was shot. He was rushed to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after receiving medical attention.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 individuals allegedly involved in the violence, including the arson attack.
The National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have condemned the violence, urging calm and restraint among residents. Eyewitnesses linked the unrest to frustration over the delayed announcement of election results, which escalated into widespread destruction and loss of life.
Authorities continue their investigations while emphasizing the need for peace to prevent further unrest. The RIPAC meeting is expected to chart a path toward restoring order in the constituency.
