Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has taken legal action against Ecobank Ghana for allegedly using the image of someone who closely resembles him in a promotional campaign without his consent.
The lawsuit, filed on March 25, 2025, accuses the bank of misleading the public into believing that Sarkodie endorsed its services. He claims the use of the lookalike has created confusion among fans and the general public, which he believes constitutes a violation of his intellectual property rights and misrepresentation of his brand.
Sarkodie, who currently represents First Bank—a direct competitor of Ecobank—is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent Ecobank from using any imagery that might imply a connection to him. He is also requesting compensation for the unauthorized use of his likeness for commercial purposes.
The artist’s legal team emphasized the impact of the situation, stating that employing a lookalike of a celebrity with existing brand affiliations crosses ethical boundaries and could potentially harm Sarkodie’s professional image.
