Google is facing an unprecedented fine from Russia, amounting to more than two undecillion rubles—a number represented by a two followed by 36 zeros—after removing several state-run and pro-government YouTube accounts. The staggering penalty far exceeds the global GDP, estimated at $110 trillion by the International Monetary Fund.
The fine continues to accumulate as Google has yet to restore 17 blocked Russian TV channels, including Tsargrad TV and RIA FAN, which were initially suspended in line with U.S. sanctions laws. The fine may double daily if unpaid within nine months, according to Russia’s RBC News.
Russia’s stringent penalties on Google escalated further following the Ukraine conflict, after YouTube blocked Russian news outlets like Sputnik and RT, prompting Russian authorities to take legal action.
