President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Brussels to rally international backing for the Gavi Alliance’s ambitious new strategy aimed at saving millions of lives through equitable vaccine distribution.
The visit, announced in a statement signed by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, marks Mahama’s participation in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation. The high-level event is being co-hosted by the European Union, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance.
The summit seeks to mobilise funding for Gavi’s 2026–2030 strategy, which aims to immunise 500 million children, prevent over 8 million deaths, and help countries guard against up to 150 potential disease outbreaks. The initiative is expected to generate more than $100 billion in global economic benefits.
His advocacy for immunisation dates back to 2013 when he actively supported Gavi’s mission to expand vaccine access for children worldwide. At the summit, Mahama is expected to engage global leaders, including the President of the EU Council of Ministers and philanthropist Bill Gates, to secure renewed donor commitments.
Since its inception in 2000, Gavi has vaccinated over 1 billion children, prevented more than 18.8 million deaths, and delivered over $250 billion in economic gains to low-income nations.
