During a White House meeting with leaders from several African nations, U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy after complimenting the English pronunciation of Liberian President Joseph Boakai despite English being Liberia’s native language.
The remark, which many across the African continent perceived as patronizing or ignorant, quickly sparked backlash on social media and among African commentators who criticized Trump for what they described as a condescending tone.
In response to the growing criticism, White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly defended the president’s comment, describing it as a “heartfelt compliment.”
“Reporters should recognize that President Trump has already done more to restore global stability and uplift countries in Africa and around the world than Joe Biden did in four years,” Kelly added.
The incident has reignited conversations about how African leaders are addressed and portrayed by Western figures, with many calling for more culturally sensitive engagement from global powers.
