On December 27, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the Accra STEM Academy, a state-of-the-art institution focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The academy is designed to equip students with skills in advanced fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. It features laboratories, classrooms, and research facilities tailored for practical, hands-on learning.
In addition to the Accra STEM Academy, President Akufo-Addo announced plans for 20 STEM centres and 10 model STEM Senior High Schools across the country. These projects aim to align Ghana’s education system with the demands of a technology-driven world by providing modern equipment and practical training.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the transformative potential of STEM education, stating:
“The world around us is changing rapidly. Technology is at the heart of this transformation, driving progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, transportation, industry, and every aspect of our lives. For Ghana to thrive in this modern era, we must equip our young people with the tools they need to succeed. STEM education is not a choice – it is a necessity.”
He highlighted the critical role of technology and science in socioeconomic development and underscored the need to prioritize disciplines like coding, data science, and renewable energy to create opportunities in emerging industries.
The Accra STEM Academy and the broader STEM initiatives are expected to foster innovation and empower Ghanaian students to tackle real-world challenges effectively.
