President Akufo-Addo Commissions 97-km Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan railway line, Ghana’s first standard gauge railway, at a ceremony held on November 22, 2024, at the Tema Harbour.

Constructed at a cost of $447 million with funding from India-Exim Bank, the railway line marks a significant step in modernizing Ghana’s transportation infrastructure.

President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding Ghana’s railway network as part of the revised 2020 Railway Master Plan. He emphasized the need for continued investment and partnerships to unlock the full potential of the nation’s economy.

The President extended appreciation to the Indian government, local chiefs, and communities impacted by the project for their patience and cooperation. He urged Ghanaians to take collective responsibility for maintaining the railway, describing it as a national asset critical for community empowerment, business growth, and industrial strengthening.
