President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital along with a 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre in Sewua, Bosomtwe District.
The commissioning ceremony, held on January 4, 2025, marks a significant boost to healthcare delivery in the region.
The Ashanti Regional Hospital, now the third-largest in the region after the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital, is expected to reduce the burden on Komfo Anokye, the country’s second-largest referral facility.
The adjoining 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre is one of 12 similar facilities built across Ghana with COVID-19 funding to manage infectious diseases.
Together, these facilities enhance access to universal healthcare and improved health outcomes for residents of the Ashanti Region.
The hospital is a state-of-the-art facility, boasting an administrative block, out-patient department, physiotherapy and gynecology wards, intensive care unit, maternity and delivery suites, laboratory, pharmacy, theatre complex, and a medical gas plant, among others.
This project is part of the Euroget hospital initiative started by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2008.
Of the nine hospitals planned, seven have been completed under President Akufo-Addo, including the 500-bed Afari Military Hospital, 160-bed Wa Regional Hospital, and 100-bed Ga East Municipal Hospital.
President Akufo-Addo urged local authorities and healthcare workers to maintain the facility and its equipment, emphasizing the importance of proper upkeep.
The Chief of Sewua, Nana Kwaku Amankwaa Sarkodie, expressed profound gratitude to the government for completing the project initiated by their native son, former President Kufuor.
He also thanked the administration for appointing key figures from the area, such as Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah.
In addition to the Sewua Infectious Disease Centre, another similar facility was commissioned at Kumasi South Hospital in Chirapatre, further solidifying the region’s capacity to address healthcare challenges.
