A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held on Thursday, August 7, at the Ceremonial Gardens of Jubilee House to honour the eight individuals who died in a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The ceremony, led by President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, formed part of a three-day national mourning period declared by the government. The crash claimed the lives of two key government ministers—Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed—alongside other high-profile individuals and military personnel.
Also in attendance were the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah; NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia; members of the Council of State; security personnel; family members; and members of the public, who gathered to pay their final respects.
The period of mourning will conclude on Saturday, August 9, with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” to be held at the Forecourt of the State House. Details of a state funeral and burial arrangements are expected to follow soon.
Among the deceased were:
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC National Vice Chairman
Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

The crash has been described as one of the darkest tragedies in Ghana’s recent history, prompting widespread national grief.
