Authorities in the North East Region have confiscated 37 bags of cocoa beans suspected to be part of a smuggling operation. The seizure occurred during an intelligence-led operation by the West Mamprusi Police Command at a private residence in Walewale.
The cocoa beans, believed to have been transported from southern Ghana, were allegedly en route to neighboring countries as part of a smuggling syndicate.
Police sources revealed that during the raid on Sunday, November 17, 2024, a suspect initially obstructed the operation by denying officers access to the storage room. However, the police forced entry and secured the goods.
The suspect has reportedly refused to cooperate with investigators, withholding information about the transport process and the planned smuggling route.
The confiscated cocoa beans are currently in police custody as investigations continue. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the smuggling of Ghanaian cocoa to neighboring countries, which undermines the country’s cocoa trade.
