The police have detained Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, after discovering a pump-action gun in her car on Sunday.

She is currently at the Cantonment Police station, aiding in the investigation.

NDC National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, criticized the arrest in a Facebook post, labeling it as a tactic by the police to intimidate and silence the NDC.

Gyamfi asserted that the firearm is registered in Okunnor’s name and that all required documents have been provided to the police.

He insisted that Naa Koryoo has committed no offense and should be released.

“Unlike Hawa Koomson, who actually discharged a firearm at a registration center in 2020, Naa Koryoo has not used any weapon. Yet, the police, allegedly influenced by the NPP, are determined to keep her in custody. I’ve been informed that the police led by Dampare have held her at the CID Headquarters since morning and are now moving her to the Cantonment Police station for further detention,” Gyamfi stated.

Gyamfi called on NDC supporters to gather at the Cantonment Police station to show solidarity with Okunnor and demand her immediate release.

“This ongoing oppression and harassment of NDC members by the police, allegedly controlled by the NPP, must stop,” the statement concluded.
