Parliament Approves €1.5m Waiver for E-Learning Laboratories in SHSs

Parliament has granted a tax waiver of €1.5 million for the provision and installation of integrated e-learning laboratories in Senior High Schools (SHSs).

This decision follows an €11.5 million commercial agreement between the government and Televic Group N.V. for the second phase of a project aimed at integrating ICT into education to enhance learning experiences.

The project’s primary goal is to incorporate ICT into education to support, enhance, and optimize the delivery of education.

The Finance Committee, led by Okaikwei Central legislator Patrick Yaw Boamah, recommended the approval, highlighting the educational and socio-economic benefits.

“The benefits to the educational sector, how the educational sector has started to gain, as well as the immense socio-economic benefits to be derived, satisfy the committee that the request is in the right direction,” stated the committee.

“The committee, therefore, recommends to the House the adoption of this report and approval of the request for the sum of €1,517,040 for the supply and installation of integrated e-learning laboratories in senior high schools.”

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, endorsed the waiver, noting that although the opposition generally opposes tax waivers, this particular case is justified due to its support for the education sector and the broader benefits for the country.

“Mr. Speaker, often the impression is created that we are against tax waivers. Yes, we are against the principles of waiving taxes, but certain tax waivers are important. Mr. Speaker, these are schools where the country is buying ICT equipment such as laptops and desktop computers to assist in learning,” he explained.
