Over GH¢1.4 Million Worth of Suspected Cannabis Discovered in Impounded Truck in Oti Region

The Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region has uncovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis valued at more than GH¢1.4 million concealed in an impounded truck.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Headquarters in Dambai on February 25, 2026, the truck a Volvo vehicle with registration number GC 3522-09  was intercepted on December 29, 2025, at the Bonakye checkpoint while heading toward Kpassa. Acting on intelligence that the vehicle was transporting illegal goods, officers stopped the truck, but the driver and one other occupant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle with the ignition key.

Following a court order granted by the Jasikan Circuit Court on February 24, 2026, the truck was officially opened at Nkwanta in the presence of a multi-agency team. Representatives from the Police, Military, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission (Jasikan), and members of the media witnessed the exercise.

A thorough search revealed 320 cartons of bottled mineral water used to conceal 91 bales of suspected cannabis. The substances amounted to 7,173 slabs, with an estimated street value exceeding GH¢1.4 million.

Police indicated that the exhibits have been retained as investigations continue. Authorities are working to track down the suspects who fled and to determine the full network behind the attempted trafficking.

The Oti Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and illegal distribution across the region. The public has been encouraged to volunteer credible information to support crime prevention and detection efforts.
