The Ghana Police Service in the Ahafo Region has arrested three men in connection with the unlawful possession of firearms and an alleged plan to carry out a robbery.

The suspects, Johnson Mawutor, 26; Kelvin Ofori, 22; and Mawuli Dogba, 20, were apprehended during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation by the Ahafo Regional Taskforce Patrol Team on the Ayomso–Goaso road late on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

According to a police statement, officers on routine patrol at about 11:30 p.m. spotted two men riding an unregistered motorbike towards Ayomso near Goaso. Upon noticing the police from a distance, the suspects allegedly switched off the bike’s headlights and made a U-turn in an attempt to flee. The patrol team pursued and arrested the pair, later identified as Mawutor and Ofori.

A search conducted on them uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, serial number 68098152, loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition concealed in a bag they were carrying.

Police later escorted the suspects to their residences at Abro Danho, a suburb of Goaso, where an additional search in Mawutor’s room led to the retrieval of a Beretta Bruni pistol (Model 92), an NM157-1941 pistol, 30 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, four Motorola handsets, a Contixo F35 drone, a machete, and a bayonet knife.

Preliminary investigations suggest that earlier that day, at about 3 p.m., Mawutor allegedly instructed his cousin, Mawuli Dogba, to accompany a man identified as Mohammed-Adinan Ussif, who is currently at large, to Techiman in the Bono East Region to collect a parcel.

Police said Ussif reportedly entered a house in Techiman and returned with a parcel concealed in a wine polyester bag. Dogba was directed to board a Toyota Voxy minibus at the Goaso lorry station with the parcel. Upon his arrival in Goaso, Mawutor and Ofori allegedly met him and took possession of the bag.

Later that night, at about 11:30 p.m., the suspects were intercepted with the bag containing the AK-47 rifle and ammunition while heading towards Ayomso.

Investigations are ongoing to arrest Mohammed-Adinan Ussif and any other accomplices. The three suspects are expected to be put before court and remanded to assist with further investigations, while the seized items have been retained as exhibits.

The Ahafo Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region and urged residents to provide information to support efforts in combating crime.
