Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has referred to the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Sudan as “mini finals” after a tough start to the qualification process.

The Black Stars, four-time champions of the tournament, are in a difficult position in Group F after a 1-0 home loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger. These results leave Ghana third in the group, making their upcoming back-to-back games against Sudan in October vital for their qualification hopes.

Sudan, now led by former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, began their campaign with a win over Niger but later suffered a 2-1 defeat to Angola, placing them second in the group with three points. Despite Ghana’s shaky start, Addo remains confident.

“Qualification is still within reach. We have a direct challenge against Sudan, and we must take advantage of this opportunity,” Addo shared during the ongoing CAF Coaches Symposium in Ivory Coast. He believes that securing at least four points from the two encounters could still ensure the team’s place in the tournament.

Adding to the pressure, Ghana must also contend with the recent ban on the Baba Yara Stadium due to poor conditions, leaving the Ghana Football Association scrambling to secure a venue for their home games, likely outside the country.
