Ghana’s Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed his belief that Kennedy Agyapong, his colleague and a contestant in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Primaries, is unlikely to secure more than 20% of the votes. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who also serves as a Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti region, made these remarks while discussing his predictions for the upcoming NPP Presidential Primaries, specifically focusing on Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s potential performance.
The NPP is set to choose its flagbearer for the 2024 general election on November 4, 2023, with over 200,000 delegates expected to participate in the decision-making process. Among the four hopefuls vying for the party’s flagbearer position are Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
During an appearance on M’abato, a political show on Akoma FM, the Majority Leader shared his predictions, stating that Agyapong would struggle to secure even 15% of the votes in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the NPP.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized his belief in the economic expertise of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, highlighting him as the ideal candidate to bring about positive change in the country’s economic situation. He stated that Bawumia’s economic acumen is unquestionable and positioned him as the right person for the job.
Recent polls have also indicated a significant lead for Vice President Bawumia in the race, further bolstering Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s prediction.
As the NPP Presidential Primaries draw near, the statements made by the Majority Leader have sparked discussions and speculation about the potential outcome of the race. All eyes will be on the delegates as they cast their votes and decide who will represent the NPP as its flagbearer in the upcoming general election.
