The Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) has thrown its support behind the envisioned 24-hour economy proposed by John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In a press statement released on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, the association expressed its endorsement of the proposed policy, emphasizing its potential impact on unemployment.
Former President John Dramani Mahama had initially introduced the 24-hour economy policy in his 2020 manifesto, reaffirming its importance during recent campaign tours. Providing further details, Mahama outlined a vision where various sectors such as healthcare, fuel stations, manufacturing, construction, waste management, financial services, and technology would operate on a continuous three-shift system.
However, the proposal has sparked debates among Ghanaians, with contrasting views on its feasibility. Notably, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, questioned Mahama’s comprehension of the policy, arguing that elements of the 24-hour economy are already in practice across diverse sectors.
In the midst of these discussions, ORAG stood in support of Mahama’s policy, asserting that it could significantly alleviate the challenges faced by its members and their families. They highlighted the potential benefits for customers, vehicle dealers, mechanics, and spare parts traders within their industry.
The association’s press statement underscored the growing interest from mechanics and vulcanizers, signifying the potential positive outcomes associated with a 24-hour economy. ORAG likened their enthusiasm for this policy shift to a unified football team executing a coordinated strategy, highlighting the envisioned convenience, increased business opportunities, and enhanced security in business operations.
The Okada Riders Association sees the 24-hour economy as a transformative solution that could revolutionize their industry, allowing for more convenient business operations and increased financial gains without the current apprehensions about security challenges.
