The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, together with senior officials of the Ghana Armed Forces, has visited the family of Private Sarfo Agyapong, the NAIMOS military officer who tragically died in a road accident while travelling to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining operation.
The fatal crash occurred late Wednesday as the team was returning from an operation at a concession in Anyankyerim that had been taken over by illegal miners. Private Agyapong was part of the security task force deployed to reclaim the site.
During the visit to the family home in Afuaman in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, November 21, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s condolences and pledged government support.
“I bring you greetings from President John Dramani Mahama. Our brother, Private Agyapong, died in the line of duty to save Ghana. He was fighting so that our forests and waters would be preserved. We will make all necessary arrangements to support the family. Please be consoled and know that your son is a hero for Ghana,” the Minister said.
Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, also assured the bereaved family that the Ghana Armed Forces would provide full military courtesies and oversee the burial according to established customs.
“I wish to assure the family that the entire Ghana Armed Forces will accord all the necessary courtesies in preparation for his burial, as military ethics demand,” he stated.
The visit formed part of efforts by the government and the military to honour the dedicated service of the late Private Agyapong, who died while protecting the country’s natural resources.
