Off-Duty Policeman Charged with Murder for Shooting Man Over Ride-Hailing Dispute

A 25-year-old off-duty policeman, Constable Smith Gyekyi, has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of Stanley Ahadzi at Koans Estate in Kuntunse Satellite, Greater Accra. The incident, which occurred on August 18, 2024, reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over a ride-hailing fare.

Constable Gyekyi, who was operating a Toyota Matiz as a commercial vehicle, picked up Esther Owusua from Ablekuma Joma at around 3:00 a.m. Owusua, unable to find her way to her destination, called Ahadzi for assistance. When Ahadzi arrived at the Koans Estate gate, a dispute arose over the fare. According to the prosecution, an agitated Gyekyi fired a warning shot before fatally shooting Ahadzi.

The police were alerted to the scene around 4:00 a.m., where they found Ahadzi’s body lying in a pool of blood. The crime scene was examined by a team led by DSP Adamu Muniru and ASP Agnes Aboagye, with further investigation revealing that Gyekyi had admitted to the shooting.

The court, presided over by Ama Adomako Kwakye, granted the prosecution’s request for remand to allow for further investigation. Gyekyi is scheduled to reappear in court on September 9, 2024.

This tragic incident has sparked outrage and concern, highlighting the dangers of firearm misuse, even by those entrusted with public safety. The case remains under investigation as the community and Ahadzi’s family seek justice.
