Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has condemned a viral photo showing a same-sex couple kissing under Ghana’s Independence Arch, calling it a “desecration” of a national monument and a sign of moral decay encouraged by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a Twitter post on Thursday, June 26, at 8:24 a.m., the MP accused former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC of promoting a culture of tolerance that emboldens foreign LGBTQ+ advocacy in Ghana.
“Under Mahama & NDC, foreign gay couple boldly desecrate our national monuments: kiss under Independence Square, flaunting Ghana flag. They’re emboldened to defy the dignity and sanctity of our rich Ghanaian values right before our eyes,” Ntim Fordjour posted.
The photo in question was shared by South African couple Lue and Rue as part of their #ShowGhanaLove campaign, which aimed to protest Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The couple took photos at several national landmarks, including the Independence Arch, sparking widespread backlash online.
Many Ghanaians on social media expressed outrage over the display, viewing it as an act of disrespect to the country’s cultural and moral values.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour responded by renewing his call for swift passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently before Parliament, stressing that such actions justify the need for legislation to protect the country’s moral and cultural fabric.
“We shall end this absurdity with the bill,” he declared.
