NPP insists on contesting Ayawaso East by-election despite calls for restraint

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed its intention to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election once the seat is officially declared vacant, rejecting calls for a non-competitive election.

The decision follows an appeal by the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who urged the NPP to refrain from contesting the by-election as a mark of respect for the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, dismissed the appeal, stating that the party does not share the same view.

He explained that comparisons being drawn between the Ayawaso East situation and the Tamale Central case were inaccurate, noting that the circumstances surrounding the two situations were fundamentally different.

According to him, the NPP’s decision not to contest the Tamale Central seat in the past was influenced by the unique circumstances under which the late MP passed away, and not merely the fact that a death had occurred.

Mr. Mohammed stressed that the circumstances surrounding the passing of the Ayawaso East MP do not warrant a similar political approach.

He stated that once nominations are opened and the seat is officially declared vacant, the NPP will fully participate in the by-election.
