The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate arrest of Chief Sofo Azorka, First National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, the NDC’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, over alleged threats and acts of violence during the Akwatia by-election.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP condemned what it described as death threats made against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annor-Dompreh. The party further accused Chief Azorka and his supporters of physically assaulting its 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu.

According to the NPP, the actions of the NDC executives and their associates not only endangered lives but also threatened Ghana’s democratic gains and peace, especially at a time when the country has seen a decline in its Global Peace Index ranking.

The party announced its intention to formally lodge complaints with the Ghana Police Service and urged the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly by arresting and investigating the individuals captured in widely circulated videos of the incident.

“The recklessness of the actions of Chief Sofo Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab ought to be properly investigated and punished,” the statement read.

The NDC is yet to officially respond to the allegations.
