The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a significant move to expand its free dialysis programme across Ghana, aiming to make life-saving kidney treatment more accessible to patients nationwide.
As part of the expansion, NHIA will supply additional dialysis machines and vital consumables to healthcare facilities throughout the country. The effort is part of a broader government strategy to enhance access to essential healthcare services, particularly for patients battling chronic kidney disease.
Speaking to the press, NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Bampoe said the initiative builds on a programme launched by the previous administration, which provided free dialysis services at 20 selected centres.
“What is needed now is to expand it and make the programme more sustainable in terms of funding,” Dr. Bampoe stated. “We want it to be treated like any other disease under the NHIS, instead of depending on special funds.”
The expansion is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on renal patients and their families, many of whom are unable to afford the high cost of regular dialysis sessions.
