On Monday, April 14, a group of newly appointed teachers from various colleges of education protested at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra over delays in receiving their salaries. The teachers, who were posted to the Ashanti Region in July 2024, are demanding payment for eight months of unpaid wages and resolution of issues related to their identification documents.
In an interview with Citi News, Abdul Majeed, one of the affected teachers, stated, “Some of us haven’t been paid for eight months, even though others in the same cohort have received theirs. That’s why we’re here—to demand answers. We’re not pleased with the feedback so far but remain hopeful.”
Another teacher shared her ordeal, saying that conflicting information from different offices has caused further frustration. “You go to the controller’s office, and they say your entrance forms are missing. At the regional office, it’s another story. We decided to come as a group to speak directly to the Director-General.”
After a private meeting with the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, the group’s leader, Adomako Korankye, confirmed that a committee had been formed to address their concerns. He noted that while the gesture is appreciated, the teachers won’t be fully satisfied until their salaries are paid.
“Our main goal is to receive what is due us. The committee gives us hope, but we’ll only be at ease once the funds are in our accounts,” Korankye emphasized.
