MTN Included in 5G Rollout Plans – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Clarifies

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, has clarified that MTN, a major telecommunications provider in Ghana, is indeed part of the plans for the upcoming 5G rollout.

Following the government’s announcement on May 30 about launching 5G within six months, some industry experts raised concerns about MTN’s exclusion from the consortium, Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC), which is responsible for the 5G implementation.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 24, Owusu-Ekuful assured host Bernard Avle that MTN will be included in the process at an appropriate time.

She dismissed the rumors of MTN being intentionally left out, labeling them as baseless and inaccurate.

“I don’t know who started that rumor. Someone made that claim without consulting me or any members involved in forming the consortium. It is simply not true,” she emphasized.

“Discussions are still ongoing. All network operators in Ghana, including MTN, are being given the opportunity to invest in this Next-Gen InfraCo,” she added.

The 5G consortium currently comprises Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and two telecommunications companies, AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.
