Mortuary workers in Ghana are preparing to go on strike starting Thursday, September 26, 2024, due to ongoing poor working conditions and unresolved grievances.
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has issued a formal notice to the government, stating that this action is a last resort after multiple unsuccessful attempts to address their concerns.
MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan highlighted several key issues, including a lack of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which exposes workers to health risks.
Additionally, the association is frustrated by unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2020 and the government’s failure to approve financial clearance for the hiring of 500 more mortuary workers.
The workers are also demanding the payment of a COVID-19 bonus previously announced by the President, which has not yet been received.
The statement pointed out the urgent need for action, noting the alarming rate of mortality among mortuary workers, with 16 deaths reported in just one year.
Until their demands are met, MOWAG members will close all mortuaries nationwide, significantly impacting funeral services across the country.
