President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, visited victims of the tragic El-Wak Sports Stadium stampede who are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The visit came after reports confirmed multiple casualties during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise that turned chaotic earlier in the day.

At the hospital’s emergency ward, President Mahama received briefings from medical officials regarding the condition of the injured and the ongoing medical response. He was accompanied by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and other government officials.

So far, at least six people have been confirmed dead, while 12 others remain in critical condition, including five in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the stampede occurred when thousands of job seekers flooded the stadium in an attempt to secure enlistment. The overcrowding at the gates led to intense pushing and jostling, which caused panic, injuries, and loss of lives.

Security personnel have since cordoned off the area, with the military blocking major roads around the stadium to maintain order and assist rescue operations. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue.

The tragic incident happened during an extended recruitment window following earlier technical issues with the GAF’s online portal.
