Mahama Accuses Finance Minister of Reckless Borrowing, Proposes 24-Hour Economy for Job Creation

In a recent address to members of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra, former National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama made scathing allegations against Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, claiming that his reckless borrowing practices had plunged Ghana into a severe economic crisis. Mahama also accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of contributing to this crisis.

Mahama asserted that the economic challenges faced by the country were a result of the government’s inability to effectively manage the economy. He stated, “[The President] has run out of ideas on how to solve the economic challenges we find ourselves in. By his recent declaration, his focus and last energy are going to be expended on installing his anointed successor as the next president.”

Specifically targeting Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Mahama accused him of excessive borrowing, which he believed had led to the economic problems Ghana is currently grappling with. According to Mahama, the signs of the impending economic crisis were apparent as early as 2019, and he characterized the Finance Minister’s actions as “reckless” borrowing.

In addition to his criticisms, Mahama introduced a potentially transformative policy proposal – the creation of a 24-hour economy that would involve a three-shift system for workers. This policy aims to address unemployment among Ghana’s youth. Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), praised this initiative as a “game changer” and emphasized the potential for job creation, encouraging the youth to prepare for such opportunities.

The TUC’s manifesto was also presented to the former president during the event, highlighting the importance of labor-related issues in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
