The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, has reaffirmed her commitment to addressing the developmental challenges facing Zongo communities in Kasoa, with a focus on improving water supply, road infrastructure, and employment opportunities.
Speaking at the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations, which mark the end of Ramadan, the MP emphasized the need to tackle these pressing issues that have persisted for too long.
“We have endured these challenges for far too long, and it’s about time we dealt with them. I have begun steps to address our water challenges as well as improve some important roads. We are very committed to addressing challenges in our Zongo communities,”
As part of her vision, Naa Koryoo called for the rebranding of Kasoa to attract investors. She urged residents to refrain from engaging in violence and criminal activities, which, she said, scare off potential businesses.
Despite the festivities, Kasoa witnessed an eruption of violence during a street carnival, leaving three people injured, with one victim in critical condition.
The violence reportedly stemmed from an ongoing feud between youth groups from Walantu and Odupongkpehe Zongo, two Muslim-dominated communities in the area. According to Mohammed Ousman, a relative of one of the victims, the groups had restrained themselves from fighting during Ramadan, but tensions resurfaced during the Eid celebrations.
“The fasting period prevented them from engaging in a fight, and the intervention of community leaders also seemed to have put the matter to rest,” he said.
A female victim recounted the moment chaos broke out:
“I was having fun with my friends when the violence suddenly erupted. I felt a sharp cut on my hand,” she said.
The Kasoa CBD Police swiftly intervened, arresting one suspect who is currently assisting with investigations. Authorities also recovered a hammer and other dangerous weapons from the scene.
Sources within the police confirmed that some members of the feuding youth groups had armed themselves with machetes and other sharp weapons. Law enforcement is actively pursuing additional suspects linked to the violence.
While Naa Koryoo remains focused on positioning Kasoa as an attractive hub for investors, the recent clashes highlight the urgent need for security measures and community engagement to ensure peace and stability in the area.
