Renowned Highlife musician George Darko, popularly known as the King of Burger Highlife, has passed away. The legendary artist, who was also the Tufuhene of Akropong with the stool name Nana Apem Darko I, reportedly died on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
George Darko rose to fame in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s with his timeless Highlife tracks that have remained popular in Ghana’s music scene. His musical talents extended beyond singing, as he was also a skilled guitarist, composer, and songwriter.
Having learned traditional dancing and drumming as a youngster, Darko was inspired by a teacher to switch to the guitar, which led him to develop a unique contemporary style in Highlife music. He was influenced by Western music, particularly The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix.
Darko’s musical journey led him to settle in Germany, where he played a pivotal role in forming the Bus Stop Band and later became its lead vocalist. Following the band’s disbandment in 1988, he continued his solo career, releasing several albums and singles that became instant classics.
One of Darko’s most famous tracks, “Akoo te Brofo,” remains a masterpiece in Highlife music. His contribution to the genre is also recognized through his inclusion in the ‘Kings of Highlife’ compilation album.
The passing of George Darko comes shortly after the loss of another Highlife icon, Kwabena Kwakye Kabobo, also known as K.K Kabobo, who died a few days earlier after battling liver disease at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
George Darko’s death is a significant loss to Ghana’s music industry, as his music and legacy will continue to inspire generations of Highlife enthusiasts.
