Several students participating in the Dormabin Inter-Circuit Games were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on the Tokuroano–Dormabin road in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region on Friday, February 27.
The students were being transported in a cargo truck (VR 342-15) when it reportedly collided head-on with a private car (GT 1109-18). The private car was then struck from behind by a Municipal Assembly Nissan pick-up (PV 380-18) carrying chairs for a commissioning event at Asukawkaw.
The injured students were rushed to the Dormabin Health Facility and the Tokuroano Clinic for treatment. Those in critical condition were referred to the Worawora Government Hospital.
The incident has generated public concern over the decision to use a cargo truck to transport students. Residents criticised sports authorities, arguing that safer buses from Dambai College of Education, Oti Senior High Technical School, Yabram Community Day Senior High School, and Asukawkaw Senior High School could have been arranged.
Police at the Tokuroano Station confirmed the crash and indicated that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority will be engaged to conduct inspections and tests on the vehicles involved.
Foster Adom, Assembly Member for the Dormabin Electoral Area, called for a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the use of the cargo truck. He stressed that funds allocated for sports activities should have been used to secure safer transportation.
“The use of a cargo truck to transport students is unacceptable, especially when safe alternatives exist. We must ensure the safety of our children during such events,” he stated.
