Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security threats to his supporters following a violent incident in Kumasi.
Agyapong’s decision comes in the wake of the stabbing of a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), affiliated with Unity Hall. The student, part of a Jama group hired by Agyapong’s team to energize the event at the Bantama Pentecost Church, was attacked during a confrontation involving armed men allegedly linked to the NPP.
Eyewitnesses say that the altercation began after a wealthy associate of Agyapong gave money to the Jama group. Shortly after, a group of heavily built, gun-wielding individuals reportedly stormed the scene and seized the cash. The confrontation escalated, with gunshots fired and one of the Jama members stabbed.
The injured student was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Agyapong and his team have lodged a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Agyapong expressed deep concern for the safety of his team and supporters. “Because of what happened yesterday, myself and my team want to pull out. Lives are threatened, and I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr. Bawumia can do his campaign,” he stated.
