The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has once again cut off electricity supply to the Kumasi City Market, popularly known as the New Kejetia Market, due to unpaid arrears amounting to more than GH¢7 million.
According to ECG, the market’s management had previously agreed to a payment plan but has since defaulted, prompting the recent disconnection.
This is not the first time the market has faced such an issue. In April 2024, the market experienced a similar power cut, which was later resolved after the management promised to settle the debt.
Although a repayment schedule was established, ECG claims that the market has failed to follow through with it.
The market’s Managing Director, Edmond Kofi Duffuor, has expressed the management’s commitment to clearing the debt, despite ECG’s dissatisfaction. He noted that, “Out of a total debt of 9.7 million Ghana cedis as of June, we have managed to pay around 1.7 million Ghana cedis. So why should we be left in the dark when we are making an effort? We aren’t paying any other service provider—no one else is receiving money from Kejetia Market except ECG.”
Duffuor also mentioned the high cost of running generators, which the market currently relies on, describing it as unsustainable.
