JUST IN: Sergio Aguero Retires From Football Following Heart Condition

Former Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero has hanged up his boots following medical advice.

Sergio Aguero, the Premier League’s top overseas goalscorer, has announced his retirement from football.

Aguero has decided to retire following medical advice after suffering chest pains while playing for Barcelona.

“It is a very difficult moment,” Aguero told a press conference in Barcelona.  “The decision I have taken for my health; the problem I had a month and a half ago.

“I have been in good hands with the medical staff. I made the decision 10 days ago after doing everything possible to have some hope of playing on.

“I am very proud for my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at five.

“I want to thank Atletico Madrid, who took a chance on me when I was 18, and Manchester City. Everyone knows how I feel about City and how well they treated me there.”

Aguero won the Premier League title five times in a 10-year career at Manchester City, scoring the iconic stoppage-time goal that secured the club’s first Premier League Trophy in 2011/12. He also won the EFL Cup six times and the FA Cup once at the club.

Aguero became one of the most prolific strikers in the history of the Premier League, scoring 184 goals in 275 appearances in the competition. Only three players have scored more.

He became the League’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer during a 6-1 victory over Aston Villa in January 2020.

And later in the same match he claimed the record for the most Premier League hat-tricks, netting his 12th to beat Alan Shearer’s total of 11.

Aguero also holds the competition’s records for the most goals for one club and the most EA SPORTS Player of the Month awards, with seven.

In addition, he has scored the joint-most goals in one match, with five against Newcastle United in 2015/16.

Aguero left City this summer to join Barcelona.
