Explosions were heard in downtown Tehran after Israel announced it had launched a missile attack on Iran.
According to Iran’s Fars news agency, several missiles struck University Street and the Jomhouri area in the capital. An Al Jazeera correspondent on the ground reported seeing smoke rising over parts of the city.
The Associated Press reported that one of the strikes occurred near the offices of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said the operation was carried out preemptively to “remove threats to the State of Israel.”
As sirens sounded across Israel, the Israeli military stated it had issued a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missile launches toward the country.
The Israel Airports Authority subsequently announced that Israeli airspace had been closed to all civilian flights and advised the public not to go to airports.
