The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has approved the promotion of 12,802 police officers between January and the first week of February 2026, clearing promotion backlogs that in some cases stretched between five and ten years.

The promotions cover ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector. According to the IGP’s Secretariat, the exercise was largely administrative and based on special recommendations in line with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (CI 76).

The Secretariat dismissed claims of nepotism circulating in sections of the media, explaining that the process was supervised at multiple levels, including unit, district, divisional, regional, and national commanders across all 25 police regions.

It emphasised that promotions within the Ghana Police Service are guided by clearly defined criteria such as examinations, seniority, years of service, performance, and, in some cases, meritorious acts of bravery. The Secretariat noted that promotions cannot be carried out solely at the discretion of the IGP.

According to the breakdown provided, about 11,900 officers in the lower ranks received one-step promotions, while approximately 600 officers were promoted based on special recommendations.

The exercise also addressed numerous petitions, including cases involving delayed promotion dates, officers who were cleared after long periods of interdiction, and posthumous promotions for personnel who died in the line of duty. The administration indicated that the move was intended to promote fairness, boost morale, and recognise sacrifice within the Service.
