Health Ministry Refers Missing Condoms Case to Police

The Ministry of Health has escalated the case involving Joy Gyaten, a driver who failed to deliver a consignment of approximately three million condoms and other contraceptives valued at 1.3 million cedis to the Eastern Regional Medical Stores in 2022, to the police for further investigation.

Joy Gyaten, now retired and in poor health, is under investigation for his involvement in the disappearance of the consignment. Emma Ofori Agyemang, the Ministry’s Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, disclosed during a Public Accounts Committee sitting that the incident had been reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Initially, Gyaten was arrested but later released on bail.

Mrs. Agyemang explained that despite the driver’s severe health condition, the Ministry is collaborating with the CID to ensure a thorough investigation and logical resolution to the case. She further mentioned that the case dossier is currently with the Attorney General’s office, and the Ministry is awaiting a response.

James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, urged the Ministry to take substantial measures to recover the lost funds.

“The driver immediately thereafter had a stroke, was very ill, but has also retired,” Mrs. Agyemang stated. She added, “We reported the matter to the CID and are cooperating fully with them. We’ve sent reminders and were informed that the docket is with the Attorney General. We are now waiting for a conclusion to proceed further.”
