Former Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, has been named the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The announcement was made by the United Nations in Ghana on Saturday, January 25, 2025, via their official Facebook page.
Ms. Tetteh succeeds Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served in the role until May 2024. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, expressed gratitude for Mr. Bathily’s leadership and acknowledged Stephanie Koury, who acted as Officer-in-Charge during the interim period.
With decades of experience at national, regional, and international levels, Ms. Tetteh has held numerous high-profile positions within the UN and the Government of Ghana.

- Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa (2022–2024).
- Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the UN Office to the African Union (2018–2020).
- Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
- Government of Ghana:
- Minister for Foreign Affairs (2013–2017).
- Minister for Trade and Industry (2009–2013).
- Member of the National Security Council, Armed Forces Council, and Ghana Free Zones Board.
- Chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers and Mediation and Security Council.
- Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya Constituency (2000–2005) and Awutu Senya West Constituency (2013–2017).
During her tenure as Minister for Trade and Industry, she was part of Ghana’s economic management team and contributed to national development initiatives.
Educational Background
Ms. Tetteh holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana and was called to the Bar in 1992 after completing her postgraduate studies at the Ghana School of Law. She is fluent in English, Hungarian, and Fante.
As the new Head of UNSMIL, Ms. Tetteh will bring her extensive expertise to foster peace and stability in Libya. Her appointment is a testament to her dedication to diplomacy and international development.
