The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has announced the suspension of its ongoing strike, which began on June 2, 2025, over delays in implementing their Collective Agreement signed in May 2024.
In a press release issued on Friday, the GRNMA said the decision to halt industrial action follows fruitful engagements with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and other stakeholders on Thursday, June 12.
The strike, which started with the wearing of red bands and escalated to a complete withdrawal of services—including Out-Patient Department (OPD) and emergency care—was aimed at compelling the government to implement the agreement covering nurses’ and midwives’ conditions of service.
According to the Association, the intervention by Parliament has created a path for an amicable resolution of the impasse with their employer.
“Based on the engagements held, the industrial action initiated on June 2, 2025, is hereby suspended pending the outcome of the follow-up meeting scheduled for June 26, 2025,” the statement noted.
GRNMA leadership called on all nurses and midwives to return to their normal duties starting **Saturday, June 14, 2025**, while assuring members of continued advocacy until the agreement is fully implemented.
The Association also addressed what it described as misinformation and propaganda surrounding the strike, emphasizing its commitment to patient welfare and professionalism.
“We are not aligned with any political party. For 65 years, the GRNMA has remained a non-partisan professional association and trade union,” the release stated, highlighting its long-standing cooperation with successive governments.
The GRNMA expressed appreciation to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health for its timely intervention, as well as to the media and the nursing and midwifery community for their support and solidarity.
