In a recent development, the government has given the green light for the disbursement of GH¢4 million from the Finance Ministry to address the outstanding debt burdening the renal unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The closure of the renal unit’s outpatient department in May 2023, owing to financial challenges, resulted in the unfortunate demise of 19 patients. This closure also posed a significant inconvenience for other patients dependent on dialysis services, compelling them to seek alternative treatments at a higher cost.
Although the facility has since resumed operations, Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu informed Parliament on Thursday that the Ministry of Health has successfully collaborated with the Ministry of Finance to secure approval for GH¢4 million. This financial aid is aimed at settling the accrued debt of the renal unit.
Manu expressed, “The Ministry of Health has formally approached the Ministry of Finance to settle the total indebtedness of GH¢4 million, and the positive news is that the Minister of Finance has just sanctioned the disbursement of this GH¢4 million to provide crucial support for our patients at Korle-Bu.”
This intervention is expected to alleviate financial burdens, ensuring the continued provision of essential medical services to patients in need.
