The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has cautioned the public to brace for more heavy and frequent rainfall in the coming days as the country enters the peak of the major rainy season.
This alert follows torrential rains over the weekend that caused flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region, notably in Pantang, Nsawam, Lakeside, and Kasoa.
Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of GMet’s Central Analysis and Forecast Office, issued the warning during an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 19. She emphasized that the intensity and frequency of rains observed so far align with the agency’s seasonal forecast.
“We indicated in our seasonal forecast that both intensity and frequency of rainfall will likely be high. It has already started along the coast and in other regions,” Ahafianyo said, referencing recent downpours in Accra and the Volta Region.
She urged residents, particularly those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to take proactive safety measures and consider relocating temporarily if necessary. She also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and to stay updated on weather alerts.
Ahafianyo called on the media to support public education efforts by consistently disseminating weather forecasts to help communities prepare for the risks ahead.
