The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the tragic killing of a soldier at Millennium City in Kasoa, Central Region.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, around 4:20 pm, involved the fatal shooting of a military officer in his late 30s during a land dispute. Two other officers who were with him managed to escape unharmed.
A suspect, identified as Benlord Ababio, has been arrested by the police in connection with the shooting.
Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day 2024 commemoration at the Koforidua Technical University on Friday, May 3, the GJA President described the soldier’s murder as an act of “depth of insanity.”
Mr. Dwumfour emphasized the media’s role in upholding the 1992 Constitution, including its human rights provisions.
He expressed concern over the gravity of the incident, stating, “To attack and kill a soldier without provocation is the depth of insanity any human being can sink to.”
While acknowledging the military’s restraint in response to the incident, Mr. Dwumfour called on the public to respect security officers and refrain from attacking them.
He urged the police to swiftly investigate the matter and prosecute the perpetrator.
Additionally, Mr. Dwumfour highlighted the importance of recognizing and appreciating the efforts of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in ensuring the country’s stability and safeguarding its territorial integrity.
